This product is close to our heart- we bring it for you from our very own pepper plantations. Pepper are actually the fruits borne by the smooth woody creeper, which entwine tall silver oak trees. They look like little green emerald beads clustered together. (Iyer maamis make spicy green pepper pickles that taste delicious with ‘thayir sadham’.) The creeper yields the pepper fruits only once a year. At harvest time, only very experienced plantation workers are sent for plucking. They climb the 35m tall silver oak trees with a single bamboo tree stem. The climbers have the balance and focus of a Chinese Kung Fu warrior. If they get distracted even for a split second, they would crash land with a mighty fall. They are then collected to be sun-dried on the ground for few weeks till the fruit around the seed shrivels into a thin black layer.
